"Galaxy Railway Story") is a 26-episode anime television series by Planet that was produced by Leiji Matsumoto, who also created the earlier Galaxy Express 999 manga. It aired in Japan from October 5, 2003 to April 11, 2004 and ran for 26 episodes. Funimation has licensed the anime for release in the United States. A sequel series, The Galaxy Railways II (銀河鉄道物語 ~永遠への分岐点~, Ginga Tetsudō Monogatari ~Eien e no Bunkiten~; lit. "Galaxy Railway Story ~Crossroads to Eternity~") aired from October 5, 2006 to March 29, 2007 and ran for 24 episodes. Near the end of the second season's run a 4 episode OVA was released as The Galaxy Railways: A Letter from the Abandoned Planet (銀河鉄道物語 ~忘れられた時の惑星~, Ginga Tetsudō Monogatari ~Wasurerareta Toki no Wakusei~; lit. "Galaxy Railway Story ~Planet of Forgotten Time~") from December 30, 2006 to April 25, 2007. It was also announced that on March 25, 2009, an off-take of the series called The Galaxy Railways: Faraway Angels (銀河鉄道物語 ~最果てのアンジェラ~, Ginga Tetsudō Monogatari ~Saihate no Anjera~) would be released as a Drama CD.

The Galaxy Railways story is somewhat of a continuance of the Galaxy Express 999 story.
