The Professor Layton series" (レイトン教授シリーズ, Reiton-kyōju Shiriizu) is a puzzle video game series for the Nintendo DS, currently consisting of four games with at least two more to come. An original anime film titled Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, was produced by Masakazu Kubo, who is mainly known for producing the Pokémon films and animated by P.A. Works, the same company that develops the animated cutscenes for the games.
The series also spawned a kids manga which first serialized since the February 2008 special edition of Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic. The title of this manga is Professor Layton and the Cheerful Mystery (レイトン教授とユカイな事件, Reiton-kyōju to yukai na jiken), covering many mysteries in the story. Whether or not the manga will be localized in other countries remains to be seen.
An official anime adaptation entitled Layton Mystery Detective Agency: Kat's Mystery Solving Files (レイトン ミステリー探偵社 ～カトリーのナゾトキファイル～, Reiton Misuterī Tantei-sha ~Katorī no Nazotoki Fairu~) is set around the 2017 game, "Layton's Mystery Journey". It premiered on Fuji TV from April 8, 2018, followed by a manga adaptation by Hori Oritoka which seralized on March 20, 2018.
Plot[]
Each title contains a series of puzzles and mysteries given by the citizens of towns that the main characters visit. It is not necessary to solve all the puzzles to progress, but some are mandatory and some at a minimum number at certain points must be solved before the story will continue.
The Eternal Diva[]
In the anime film, Layton receives a record in the mail from Jenis Quatlane, a famed opera singer and a former student of his. The story recalls Layton's flashback around his adventure with her. After the events of The Specter's Flute, Layton receives a letter from Jenis regarding many strange things were happening at the opera house she is performing. In addition, two young girls from the London area have been reporting missing, and Jenis thinks the two cases are related. She invites Layton and Luke to the enormous Crown Petone theatre built on the Atlantic Ocean, while Remi and Doctor Schrader stay back in London to search for the missing girls. The performance was applaudable until Layton and Luke discover a mysterious masked man to be the true perpetrator. The masked man begins talking about the Eternal Life and forces the audience in a game of life and death for the prize. With no way out and the audience breaking into panic, it's up to Layton and Luke to solve the case.
Kat's Mystery Solving Files[]
Taking place during the events of Millionaire's Conspiracy, the series follows Katrielle Layton, daughter of the renowned Professor Hershel Layton, who has set up the Layton Detective Agency alongside her assistant, Ernest Greeves, and a talking dog named Sherl. Together, they take on all kinds of requests to solve mysterious cases troubling their fellow Londoners.
