The story is about a 11-year old girl, Saga, who lives in the German town Muhlenberg (based on real town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber). Saga lives with her grandma and works in a coffee shop when she's not at school. One day, Saga notices a small creature in a white outfit that appears to be starving. Saga gives the creature a waffle. Saga learns that this creature is Sugar, an apprentice season fairy. Sugar tells Saga that season fairies play music and make weather happen (snow, wind, thunder, lightning, etc.). Sugar has two more apprentices, Salt and Pepper. All three apprentices are shocked that Saga can see them, while normally humans can not see season fairies. They explain they came to earth to find "twinkles". They need "twinkles" to become full-fledged season fairies.
