A Certain Magical Index

A Certain Magical Index (とある魔術の禁書目録 (インデックス) , Toaru Majutsu no Indekkusu) is a Japanese light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Kiyotaka Haimura, which has been published by ASCII Media Works under their Dengeki Bunko imprint since April 2004 and has released 60 volumes as of June 2022. Yen Press have licensed the novels in North America and have released 22 volumes as of March 2020. A manga adaptation by Chuya Kogino began serialization in Monthly Shōnen Gangan from May 2007. As of June 18, 2022, 27 tankōbon volumes have been published. J.C.Staff produced two 24-episode anime series between 2008 and 2011. An animated film was released in February 2013. The anime adaptations are licensed in North America by Funimation. The third season, 26-episode anime, was broadcast from 2018 to 2019.

Side story and spinoffs[]

The side-story manga series, A Certain Scientific Railgun (とある科学の超電磁砲 (レールガン) , Toaru Kagaku no Rērugan), began serialization in Dengeki Daioh in February 2007. A second side-story manga series, A Certain Scientific Accelerator (とある科学の一方通行とある科学の一方通行 (アクセラレータ) , Toaru Kagaku no Akuserarēta), began serialization in Dengeki Daioh in December 2013 and has completed serialization with 12 published volumes in August 2020. A third side-story manga series, Astral Buddy (アストラル・バディ, Asutoraru Badi) began serialization in April 2017 and has completed serialization with 4 published volumes in October 2020. A fourth side-story manga, A Certain Scientific Dark Matter (とある科学の未元物質 (ダークマター) , Toaru Kagaku no Dāku Matā), began serialization in August 2019 and has completed serialization with one published volume in March 2020. A fifth side-story manga, A Certain Scientific Mental Out (とある科学の心理掌握 (メンタルアウト) , Toaru Kagaku no Mentaru Auto), began serialization in Comic Newtype in July 2021.

Plot[]

Toaru Majutsu no Index is set in a city of scientifically advanced superhuman students, but in a world where magic is also real. Touma Kamijo's right hand, the Imagine Breaker, will negate all magic, psychic, or divine powers, as well as his own luck. One day he finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing named Index. She turns out to be a nun from the Church of England, and her mind has been implanted with the Index Librorum Prohibitorum—all the magical texts the Church has removed from circulation. His encounter with her leads him to meet others from the secret world of science and magic and an adventure with his friends where science and magic collide. Touma's unusual power places him at the center of conflicts relating magicians and science-based Esper in Academy City. As Touma tries to help and protect his friends, he learns the people he knows are not as they appear and begins to attract the attention of magicians and espers alike as they try to unravel the secrets of Academy City and Index.
